Chili is the primary community in Richland Township. The first log cabin in Richland Township was built in 1836, Chili was first laid out in 1839 with the name of New Market.

In 1886 the Peru and Detroit Railway was ran through Chili. At one time transportation for the citizens of Richland Township was provided by the Vandalia Railroad and the Winona Interurban.
