Household Hazardous Waste

For 2011, on the third Wednesday of the month, beginning in April and running through October, you are able to drop off your household hazardous waste.

Household Hazardous Waste includes any chemical around the house used for cleaning, drain opening, etc., batteries of any size including car, fluorescent bulbs, oil based paint and stains, old oil, antifreeze, fuels, etcetera.  Visit our disposal page for more information on properly disposing of household hazardous waste.  Please call if you have a question.

Latex paint is not a hazardous material and will not be accepted. It can be dried out, either by leaving the lid off, or adding kitty litter to it, and placed in your regular garbage. When dried latex paint is taken to the landfill, it helps to absorb some harmful chemicals and helps to keep the landfill cleaner.

Alkaline batteries (not the rechargeable type) are not considered hazardous. They can be put into your regular garbage. Like latex paint, they help keep the landfill in better shape due to the alkaline helping balance the PH of the soil in the landfill.

The drop off location is at the rear of Recycling Recovery, 38 East 9th Street, Peru (about a half block behind Hardees).

Drop offs are only accepted at the site on the set days by appointment only.  No unattended drop-offs at the site.  A photo ID and proof of Miami County residency are required.  The drop-off times are from 9:00 am until 3:00 pm on the following days:

April 20
May 18
June 15
July 20
August 17
September 21
October 19

By following the rules of the programs, you help to keep the yearly recycling fee low. When rules are ignored, it costs the Solid Waste District more money to continue the programs, and will result in having to raise the fee to continue to cover the costs related to our recycling programs.
