Converse, Indiana
Converse, whose population was 1,137 in the 2000 census, actually lies in both
Grant and Miami counties. Originally named Xenia, Converse was first laid
out in 1849, by O.H.P. Macy and Willis Elliot.
During the early 1900's the Miami County Agricultural Association would hold its
annual fair and races in Converse each Fall, which at the time was the only fair
in Miami County. Converse is the hometown of celebrities as well.
Early motorcycle racing star Ray Creviston started his career on the Converse
Fairgrounds half mile track. He raced for the Indian Motorcycle Company
which helped to promote them against Harley Davidson.
Another of Converse's well-known's is Monte Towe, who was inducted into the
Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in March of 2002. Mr. Towe is currently
the associate head coach at North Carolina State, his alma mater.
